TOM IN THE MACHINE

University of Maryland - School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies
Second Season - January 2016
Dance Theatre at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center

Original Dance Work by Orange Grove Dance
Projection Co-Design by Mark Costello and Kelly Colburn

Photos by Mark Costello

A movement and media adaptation on The Grapes of Wrath, it frames the piece within an instructional training video. Tom becomes trapped in the bureaucracy of the workplace he is placed in as his personal life, his family, and his mental health deteriorate as it engulfs the entirety of his soul in the end. The lighting begins as merely suggestions and pointers, to extremely graphical and attacking.
